FREMONT, CA: At the 2022 Waste Management Symposia, Westinghouse Electric Company and Perma-Fix Environmental Services, signed a term sheet, indicating plans to build a state-of-the-art
advanced materials treatment facility in the United Kingdom. The facility, which will be built at Westinghouse's Springfields site, would increase waste treatment capacity for the European nuclear market. Following the completion of the transaction, Westinghouse is projected to own 55 percent of the venture and Perma-Fix the rest.
The Perma-Fix Bulk Processing Unit (BPU), a vessel designed to treat a wide spectrum of radioactive materials, will be part of the new facility. The BPU takes a wide range of materials while lowering waste volume by 30 to 100 times, meeting European disposal facility waste acceptance guidelines. Cross-contamination is also avoided using the BPU.
Perma-Fix CEO commented that they are glad to spread their proven technology to the European market along with Westinghouse. There are roughly 5.1 million tonnes of total waste requiring treatment in the United Kingdom alone, including radioactive waste in storage and garbage from decommissioning operations. We're excited to collaborate with Westinghouse and use our experience to provide safe treatment alternatives for some of the world's most complex waste streams. The President of Westinghouse’s
Environmental Services expressed the firm’s enthusiasm to collaborate with Perma-Fix to provide European customers with increased access to the full range of treatment capabilities – from characterization, packaging, consignment, and transport, to receipt, storage, sort and segregation, treatment, and final disposal.
Perma-Fix began operations in 1990 and has invested over €54 million in existing radioactive remediation facilities and technology. The company owns and operates three nuclear waste treatment facilities in the United States that treat more than 50,000 metric tonnes of radioactive waste per year from international waste generators, the United States Department of Energy (DOE), the United States Department of Defense (DOD), nuclear reactors, and nuclear research facilities. As a global nuclear services provider, Perma-Fix ensures that customer materials are handled in strict accordance with all international environmental requirements.
